October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the year's best opening to talk with staff about the everyday habits that keep schools secure. Most successful attacks still start with something simple: a reused password, a missing second factor, a convincing email or an update left for later.
For October 2024, the Digital Trust Hub gave members a month-long staff campaign built around four themes, one for each week:
- Strong passwords and password managers
- Multifactor authentication
- Recognizing and reporting phishing
- Keeping software updated
Each theme came with a ready-to-send staff email and supporting materials such as posters, tip sheets and short curated videos. An overview email, infographic and posters introduced the month, and a cybersecurity-at-home set, with a parent email and a family tip sheet, carried the message home.
Districts could run the whole month as written or pick the pieces that fit their own plans.
